Coup d'Etat in Myanmar, what impact on access to financial services and the microfinance sector?
On 1 February, the military junta took power in Myanmar and Aung San Suu Kyi, the country's leader, was arrested. Since then, opponents of the coup have been demonstrating to demand her release and a return to democracy. The junta responded with increasing violence, resulting in numerous civilian deaths and arrests.
This political crisis had an immediate impact on the financial and banking system: devaluation of the currency, loss of confidence in the banking system, queues at the counters to withdraw cash, difficulties in getting currency in and out of the country.
How have the clients of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) and the MFIs themselves been impacted? What measures have been put in place at the MFI level to adapt in this context already weakened by the COVID crisis? Microfinance in Myanmar is a relatively young sector and is strongly supported by foreign investors. Will these investors continue to provide funding in the absence of visibility on the evolution of the political situation?
This web conference - debate, organized by the Paris Microfinance Club will attempt to answer these questions.
After a global presentation of the sector and the situation by ADA, the NGO GRET, the MFI ADVANS and the investor Alterfin will bring their views on the crisis and its impacts on their clients and their activities.
The conference will be moderated by Bénédicte Godefroid - Head of Capacity Building & Sector Support - ADA Luxembourg.
Speakers :
• Jean-Marc Debricon - General Manager - Alterfin
• Emmanuel Aris - Senior Investment Officer - Advans International
• Baptiste Larnaudie - Financial Inclusion Project Manager - GRET
