SSNUP project completion: Strengthening the core banking system of a microfinance institution in Kenya
Between August 2023 and March 2024, SSNUP supported a project by Alterfin to address key operational challenges of the microfinance institution ECLOF which targets economically active but vulnerable communities across Kenya.
Although ECLOF had a core banking system in place, limited connectivity between branches and the head office along with manual onboarding and credit assessment processes slowed down service delivery and constrained growth.
The project aimed to strengthen ECLOF’s digital infrastructure by integrating field data capture and credit scoring modules into its existing system to enhance data quality, accelerate credit decisions and improve overall efficiency in serving smallholder farmers and rural clients.
As all staff now have real-time, mobile access to integrated systems, clients in remote areas no longer need to travel to the nearest branch and can receive offers for tailored services on the spot. These faster and improved services attracted over 5,000 new clients, nearly half of whom are smallholder farmers. Approximately €1.8 million in loans were disbursed to these farmers.
